Steps to Acquire Certification:
Decide Which Certification is Right for You:
There are a variety of project management certifications available, so it’s important to determine which one best fits your career goals. The two most widely recognized certifications are the Project Management Professional (PMP) and the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM).
Gather the Required Experience and Education:
Both the PMP and CAPM require applicants to have a certain level of experience and education in order to qualify for certification. For the PMP, applicants must have a minimum of 4,500 hours of experience leading and directing projects, as well as a bachelor’s degree. For the CAPM, applicants must have 1,500 hours of project experience, or 23 hours of project management education.
Prepare for the Exam:
Once you have determined which certification is right for you and gathered the necessary experience and education, the next step is to prepare for the exam. There are a variety of resources available to help you study for the exam, including books, online courses, and practice exams.
Register for the Exam:
Once you are ready to take the exam, you will need to register with the Project Management Institute (PMI). You can do this online or by mail.
Take the Exam:
The PMP and CAPM exams are computer-based and administered at testing centers around the world. The exam consists of multiple-choice questions and is typically four hours long.
Receive Your Results:
Once you have completed the exam, you will receive your results within five business days. If you pass the exam, you will be officially certified as a project management professional.
Maintain Your Certification:
Once you have acquired your certification, it is important to maintain it. The PMI requires certified professionals to acquire 60 professional development units (PDUs) every three years in order to maintain their certification.
Renew Your Certification:
Once your certification has expired, you will need to renew it in order to remain certified. You can do this by taking the PMP or CAPM exam again, or by completing the necessary PDUs.
